Gaelic Football League

Every year in our school we have a gaelic league. The classes that train are: 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. The teachers that coach us are: Ms. Phelan, Ms. Hayes, Ms. Murphy and Ms. O'Keeffe. We train on the back football field at big break.
We participate in two leagues. The leagues are the Kilkenny Cup and the in-school mini-league.

Swimming Lessons

The Watershed, Kilkenny.
We go swimming every week for the first seven weeks of term. Third to sixth class learn how to swim. We travel to the Watershed, in Kilkenny City. There are three ability groups: the shallow end, the middle group and the deep end. The swimming strokes that we learn are breast stroke, front crawl and back crawl. The diving moves we learn are the pencil, the cannon ball and the normal dive. Most importantly, we learn about water buoyancy and water safety.
In June, we will enter the Kilkenny schools' swimming gala. We won lots of medals last year, and even earned the overall boys' team trophy in a previous year. This year we organised races on the last day of our swimming lessons. Those children from third to sixth who won these races will represent the school in the inter-county swimming gala later this year. Best of luck to all!

Spikeball

Gowran National School participate in an interschool's spikeball blitz in February each year. Spikeball is similar to volleyball, with six players on each team. Four players play in the court, whilst two players are substituted in, on rotation, on winning service. Spike ball is played on a standard badminton court with a net raised one metre high.
We play against other from school across County Kilkenny, and the winners of the boys, girls, and mixed teams qualify to play in the National Finals in Cork. In previous years, Gowran has succeeded in qualifying for these finals. Best of luck to this year's sixth class!

Tennis

We play tennis in our school in the third term of school. Mrs. Kennedy referees our matches. The match winners are decided by the first to three games and in the final, it's the first team to one set (six games). The matches start in May. In or around fifty children enter the tournament. All the matches are on a knock out basis. The pupils that participate are from fourth, fifth and sixth class. The tennis matches are doubles and mostly players are a boy with a girl but not all the time. We look forward to our 'Wimbledon Championships' each year!
Horse Riding

Whilst the school does not offer horse riding, many of the pupils participate in horse riding lessons at local centres, and on occasion, represent the school in competitions. Their latest scoop is the winning of team and individual events in November, with the Gowran NS team winning both the novice and open competitions in the Warrington inaugural Primary Interschools showjumping event, beating off several local teams. Well done to all!
Sports Day

Each year will hold an annual Sports Day. We hold traditional running races, novelty races, and a school relay race. All the pupils of the school are divided into three teams: red, blue and green. Each race awards points to first, second and third place. The team with the most points at the end of the day wins. It is a fantastic day and the children really enjoy the occasion!
