Science week this year was fascinating. It was on the 12th to the 16th of November. All classes tried to do extra science for the week.
This is what the classes did!
Mrs ‘o Connell's Junior Infants sorted materials into paper, plastic, wood ,fabric and metal. They used magnets to test each material.
Mrs Kennedy and Ms Murphy’s Senior Infants half filled a clear basin full of water .The children predicted which items might sink and which might float. Then they put the items in the water and recorded the results.
Ms Hayes 1st class did a few experiments such as dancing raisins, making volcanoes, they mixed vinegar with baking soda to see the chemical reactions and they tested items with magnets.
Ms Reddy’s 2nd class also did magnet testing to see which items would stick to the magnets and which would not. They also made a volcano with vinegar and baking soda.
Ms.O’ Connell's 3rd class identified magnetic materials. They did an electricity experiment as well.
Ms. O’Keeffe's 4th class made thaumateopes and parachutes. They tried out different materials to see which would work better.
Ms. Tighe’s 5th class made simple machines; planes ,pulleys and wheel and axle and recorded which one they needed the most in the world.
Ms. Phelan’s 5th/6th class did a few experiments on water absorbancy, heat retention, the strenght of different papers, what material best muffles sound and bouncy egg (which did not work!).
Mrs. O’ Keeffe.s 6th class did a few things about magnets and electricity.
We all had a great time working as Scientists for the week!
