On Thursday, December 17th, Sergeant Kieran Kennedy and Private John Flynn from Stephens Barracks Kilkenny visited our school to present a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and the Irish Flag. All schools in Ireland are receiving these as part of the upcoming 1916 Centenary Commemoration celebrations. The flag will be raised throughout the country on March 15th which has been designated as Proclamation Day. All classes attended the presentation which began with a traditional tune by some of our 6th class pupils. This was followed by an introduction to the seven signatories of the Proclamation and a reading of one of the paragraphs, also by 6th class students. Then Sgt Kennedy explained about Easter Week 1916 and the origins of the flag to the children and answered questions. Finally, Brogan accepted the Proclamation and Eva Marie accepted the flag on behalf of the school. When the ceremony was over, the pupils from 5th class performed a wonderful play about 1916 to a very appreciative audience! ( see photos on the Classes section )
