Gaelic Football 2018

The football season kicked off yesterday afternoon on what was a warm, sunny day! The girls travelled to Kilkenny City to play St. Canice's in their first match. Although they didn't end up winning this game, the girls played their hearts out and never stopped going until the final whistle!

Our second opposition this year came from Dunnamaggin. It was a great game of football with Dunnamaggin just edging it on a scoreline of 1-9 to 3-1.

In the first match, they played St. Canice's and were beaten bu just 2 points.

In the second match they played Dunamaggin and won by a couple of gals.

Unfortunately having been beaten in the first game, Gowran were just pipped by St. Canice's to win the cup. Well done to all!

SCHOOL MINI-LEAGUE FINALISTS 2015

School Football Team 2015
We had our first training session the second week into school. There was a big turnout for the girl’s football team that day.
We were improving during every session.
After a few weeks, we (6th class) started training the 2nd class. It’s going very well.
At the beginning of October we started the mini-league. The final is going ahead this Friday.
We all got a little competitive since we started and because of all our hard work and training, we are now in the Primary Schools B Final against Piltown. which will be played before the end of November.

Our Wins and Losses
Training is what has gotten us to the final and we owe it all to our teachers, Ms. O Keeffe and Ms. Hayes.
In our league there was Graiguenamanagh, Thomastown, Clara, Owning and Piltown.
We won two of our league matches. One against Owning and one against Graiguenemanagh. The rest we lost unfortunately. This put us into the B competition which we are now in the final of. Well done to all players involved. Take a closer look below at the panel of players.

Semi Final: Gowran NS vs Muckalee NS
Match Report
5th November 2015

On Thursday November 5th, the Gowran girls’ football semi final took place in James’s Park. We played Muckalee.
The ball was thrown in at quarter past three. We were up by a point after the first minute but Muckalee soon came back with a point to level the score. It stayed level for a good while after, the ball stayed mostly in the middle of the field.
Next, the Gowran players carried the ball up the pitch superbly, leading to Sarah O’Donnell scoring an amazing goal in the top corner.
To level the score Muckalee scored a goal at the other end of the pitch but of course Sarah responded straight away with another goal.
Following this, Muckalee kicked a point over the bar which put pressure on Gowran. After this point, Muckalee went on to score a goal.
With two minutes to go Rebecca Lennon (the excellent Gowran goalkeeper) kicked the ball out to Sarah, who ran half the pitch and then passed off to Marie O’Keeffe, who passed to Rose Prendergast, with Rose making the final delivery to Sarah who showed quick reactions to score another point. A minute later the whistle blew for half time!
When we were all lined out back on the pitch the referee threw the ball back in. Muckalee responded quickly with a goal in the top corner and another soon after.
Gowran weren’t prepared to lose just yet!
There was five minutes to go when Muckalee hit the crossbar which led to the backs winning the ball and carrying it down the pitch.
Gowran won a free shortly after, at the other end. Sarah kicked the ball, going for point, when it amazingly dropped in for a goal. We were back in it!
For the final few minutes, Gowran were on fire! The forwards worked tirelessly in the dying minutes and were rewarded with another point to secure Gowran’s place in the final.
With one last surge of energy Sarah ran the field to score yet another goal. Muckalee had lost all hope. Muckalee’s goalie kicked the ball out and the ref blew his whistle. That signalled the end to the game. We had won!!
It took a massive effort from our solid goalie, to those who battled hard in the backs, ran their legs off in midfield and all the opportunities taken up front by our forwards.

Girls Football 2013

Gowran Super Girls!!!

This year the girls Gaelic team got off to a great start. They
trained hard from the start of the year. The first match was against the
Gaelscoil and they had a very successful outing.

In round two they played Piltown and they were also satisfactory,
coming home with another win. Our
next match was against Owning & Templeorum and we also were very happy with
the result.

Then the toughest match came. They  played
Thomastown and it was a tight match but Thomastown came out on top with a two
goal lead. However Gowran still played excellently. Our last match before the
semi-finals was against St.Canices and they put up a great fight but we beat
them in the end.

In the semi-finals they beat Owning Templeorum in a really tough
match.

They are now in the Roinn A County Final against Thomastown in
Nowlan Park. We wish them the best of luck!!!

Match takes place today, Wednesday 13th
Nov.

Good Luck Girls..............

County Finalists!

Congratulations to our girls football team who had a wonderful victory on Wednesday, November 13th, against Thomastown in the Roinn A County Final in Nowlan Park. It was an exciting game, with the Gowran girls taking a firm hold on the game from the outset, displaying great skill. However, it was in the second half, as Thomastown began to fight back, that the girls showed great tenacity and battled bravely to achieve their victory. Captain Ciara accepted the cup on behalf of Gowran and thanked their teachers - Ms. Murphy, Ms. Hayes and Ms. Phelan - for their time and commitment. Everyone enjoyed the well deserved refreshments afterwards in KFC!
