When Ms. Tighe told us that we were going to be making a Fís film, we were all so excited. Fís is a five minute film that you make with your class and then you present it in the Kilkenny Educational Centre.
The next step was to think of an idea. We got into groups and thought of lots of ideas and presented them to the class. Everyone voted and the next day we were told who won. The idea that won was a film where children are in school and lights start flickering and there are strange noises. The children then decide to stay in the school over night. When they get there everything seems fine but then the girls go up to another class and then the boys hear them scream. They run to the class and there is something there. Everything goes black. Then we all changed the idea as when we looked ahead to the script writing stage, we felt the plot wasn't strong enough! It is now about Dame Alice Kytler’s maid Petronella! Four children try to set Petronella’s soul free. We got the idea of how to choose an angle on a ghost/spirit theme from our trip to author Nicola Pierce.
The next job was to write the script. All the script writers got together and decided the characters. After that they wrote out all the script. Next the editors took the script and fixed it up. Then our FÍS mentor called Willie McTiernan came in and showed us how to put a storyboard together.
The promotion/storyboard group took the script and decided the shots for each scene. A shot is when the camera is looking at one thing and then moves on to the next. When they were finished the actors took the script and started rehearsing. When we started filming we quickly realised that the 3rd classroom was too big and the lighting was wrong!!! We scrapped that scene and decided to film in the 5th class room. When we finished that we filmed scene 5 the next day! After we went on a history tour and after the tour, we filmed in our spare time at Kytler’s Inn. The next week we filmed in St. Mary’s Church. We filmed the flashback scene of Petronella's sentencing in Gairdín na nÓg. After that the next week we filmed in Fr. Dalton's garden(with his permission!). In the middle of all this the promotion/storyboard group were making this blog, posters and speeches for when we went to classes and when we went into the Educational Centre.
Finally we gave all the scenes to the editing group so they could put the film together. After that the editors inputted the credits. Then we showed all the classes the film. They learned lots about Petronella and loved the movie. Let’s hope it goes just as well in Kilkenny!!!!!!
