Gowran N.S. Debating Champions 2017

15/6/2017

This is the story of our LONG debating journey. It all started out with the trials for the debating team. The end results were Rory as Captain,Matthew as 2nd Speaker and Stephanie as 3rd Speaker. Alicia, Aaron and Leanne were chosen as three subs for the team.
Our first debate was against Móin Ruadh.  The motion was "Social media is making us anti-social."  We were all really nervous as it was our first debate but we did great!
The next debate was in Mullinavat. We were so delighted to win and were gaining confidence in our debating.
Now lets skip on to our Semi-Final which was against The Model School, Kilkenny.  The motion was "Charity Begins At Home." It was a close debate but luckily we came out on top! Next step the final!
THE FINAL!
The Final of the Concern Debates was Scoil Mhuire, Gowran against Holy Family B.N.S, Askea and the final motion was "Animal Testing Is a Necessary Evil." We were all very nervous as this was the debate we had wanted to get to since the very start. The whole class got to come to the debate.  Thank god it went brilliantly and we were now the 2017 CONCERN PRIMARY DEBATING CHAMPIONS!!! We celebrated with McFlurrys in McDonalds! We were all so happy with the achievement.

Primary Debating

16/11/2013

Picture
6th Class took part in a regional debating competition.
There were many debates in the classroom and finally a group of six children were chosen to represent us.

Our team was Aoife Farrell, Caithlin Simpson, Kyle Dreeling, Tiffanie Fitzgerald, Eddie Gittens and Zoe Fenlon.
Their first debate was against Paulstown where they were opposing the motion "Homework is a waste of time".
It was an excellent debate with the whole class attending it in Paulstown school. Both teams were excellent and the adjudicators had a difficult job making their decision.  Paulstown won in the end.
Well done to all involved and we wish Paulstown success.

Hedgerow Nature trail

3/10/2013

One   Friday, 6th class went on a nature walk with Ms Phelan and Bridget. It was a
lovely cool day. We walked through the village, passed Rock Field to Clover
Lane. The reason why we did this is that we were studying hedgerows. We took
clipboards and work sheets with us. The work sheets had pictures of leafs and if
we saw them we would tick them off. We all had lots of fun trying to find all
the leaves that we learned about. Some of the leaves that we found were Alder,
Ash, Hazel and lots more. When we found all the leaves we returned back to the
school. We loved learning about hedgerows.
