Bill collapsed against a tree. He had been running for the past hour with his Labrador, Joey. Bill had been walking in the woods with Joey and his family when the soldiers had come. Bill's dad had told the family to run but the soldiers gave chase. Bill had been separated from his family when two soldiers had chased him. He managed to shake them off but had stayed running, just to be safe. He was exhausted from the effort and had to stop, with Joey panting beside him. "It's okay boy, we'll be fine," Bill whispered, more to reassure himself than the dog. When he regained his breath, the pair walked on until suddenly, Joey gave a yelp and ran ahead. "Hey, wait!" Bill cried. He ran after him and then, he paused. Joey had stopped at the side of a familiar river. He knew this river well. He gave a whoop of delight and waded through the churning water. When he got to the other side, he could see the roof and chimney of a cottage; his cottage. He was home!

Kieran, I was blown away by your story! Yes... it is a little on the long side (!) but every word has its place and every sentence is part of the fabric of the story. If I was told it was written by Michael Morpurgo himself, I would believe it! Perhaps the influence is there in the writing... with the choice of the name Joey for the animal?! You are a natural writer, Kieran!
