“Oh no! That’s all we need, homeless people cluttering up our lovely park” said the passer by.  The little girl, holding his hand, looked at me and I was embarrassed by the expression on her face.  Was it hatred, pity or maybe disgust?  I am in need of a wash, clean clothes and nutritious food.  I spend my days searching rubbish bins, sleep under the moonlit sky in a cardboard box cushioned with leaves, and nobody but the occasional raccoon to talk to.  “Excuse me Mister”, I hear a timid voice, “I hope you don’t mind but I brought you some sandwiches and an old coat”.  I smiled as I realised, it was compassion!

I will confess, I think the hardest challenge is the five word challenge. From where do you draw the inspiration?! Danny, this is an exceptional piece of writing. You have kept the style of the writing simple but it is how the voice of the character is revealed in a series of prompts that gives the story its depth. You are giving a voice to a person that has been dehumanised by the passer by... when they regarded the other person as clutter, judging their worth or their perception of the lack of value the main character offered to society? The simple gesture of the offer of food and clothes shows that the little girl empathised with the plight of main character. It intrigued me that while you had not stated the position or pose of the main character, I have imposed my own visualisation of the scene. A brilliant piece of writing that is thought provoking and mature! Well done, Danny!
