Tharuki was sent by his family to work on a tea plantation outside of Colombo. He was only eleven and had to work in horrific conditions for long hours six days a week. He needed to send money home to support his family. He had heard rumours of sightings of leopards but until now he assumed that people were just trying to scare him. Taking a breather for a second he turned to face one of the rarest species of cat in the world. For a second he was startled, almost in admiration, but this was quickly replaced by fear. That’s when he knew he should run, but could he outrun this magnificent animal?

You had me hooked from your opening sentence, Danny. I loved that it immediately provided the reader with clear answers to the key questions: who, where and what. It also demonstrated a more mature story and created many possibilities of where the story might go. I loved that you provided the reader with the reality of his life in Sri Lanka at the age of only eleven. The image of the leopard was so striking and his reaction was captured perfectly with the flurry of emotions. Tharuki's respect for the animal reflected the culture of his country towards animals in the wild. A superb 100WC, Danny!
